In Sacramento, after defeating the Minnesota Timberwolves without De’Aaron Fox, the Kings were on the path to a convincing victory on Monday, only to falter in the final moments.
Despite facing a Chicago Bulls team that had been performing averagely throughout the 2023-24 NBA season, the Kings struggled to maintain their lead at the Golden 1 Center, resulting in a 113-109 loss.
During the final four minutes of the game, Sacramento squandered a 14-point lead, made crucial turnovers, and allowed the Bulls to outscore them 13-1.
After the defeat, Kings coach Mike Brown expressed his disappointment, stating, “In our industry, momentum can shift in an instant, and before you know it, you’re in trouble. I don’t think our players consciously relaxed. I believe we failed to execute from the start of the game.
“Even when we were in the lead, we didn’t move the ball effectively, leading to turnovers. Eventually, it caught up with us.”
The loss hindered the Kings (34-26) from advancing in the Western Conference standings. A victory would have brought them close to the No. 5 seed held by the New Orleans Pelicans. Instead, they slipped half a game behind the Phoenix Suns in No. 6, with the Dallas Mavericks trailing closely in No. 8.
This defeat was a bitter pill to swallow.
In the fourth quarter, Sacramento was outscored 36-18, with DeMar DeRozan scoring 19 of his 33 points to fuel the Bulls’ comeback.
As both Brown and Fox pointed out, the Kings derailed themselves by deviating from the game plan.
Chicago boasts the NBA’s top interior defense, limiting opponents to an average of 44.4 points in the paint. In anticipation of this type of defense, Brown and his coaching staff emphasized kicking the ball out to the perimeter instead of driving inside.
While the Bulls have been average in defending 3-pointers, allowing opponents to shoot nearly 37% from beyond the arc, Sacramento failed to stick to the strategy. The Kings only made 11 of their 32 attempted 3-pointers and went 0 for 6 from long range in the crucial fourth quarter.
