Lose Weight Fast: Just Two Workouts a Week!

March 6, 2024 – The concept of the “weekend warrior” may have more merit than previously thought.

A recent study indicated that condensing all physical activity into 1 or 2 days could be just as effective for fat loss as spreading it out over the course of a week.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of the weekend warrior exercise approach. A 2023 study involving nearly 90,000 individuals revealed that weekend warriors had lower rates of heart attack, stroke, or heart failure compared to inactive individuals. Another study of around 351,000 adults found no significant difference in the risk of premature death between weekend warriors and those who exercised three or more times per week.

The recent study focused on the relationship between the weekend warrior exercise pattern and body fat percentage, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA scan) to measure fat levels.

Dr. Lihua Zhang, a healthcare scientist at Fuwai Hospital’s National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases in Beijing and the lead author of the study, stated, “In our fast-paced society, we aim to explore alternative fitness strategies for individuals who may struggle to meet the recommended exercise frequency.”

By analyzing data from 9,600 participants through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), Zhang and her team discovered that among those who reported exercising for at least 150 minutes per week (the minimum recommended exercise duration for adults), 772 individuals – the weekend warriors – compressed their workouts into 1 or 2 days.

Both the weekend warriors and the regular exercisers exhibited lower belly fat, reduced waist circumference, lower body mass index, and lower body fat percentages compared to individuals who did not engage in regular exercise. Remarkably, the two groups showed similar results in these aspects despite differences in exercise frequency.

Moreover, these findings remained consistent regardless of the participants’ dietary habits. Zhang noted, “Regardless of whether someone maintained a healthy diet, the weekend warrior approach was still linked to lower adiposity, or body fat.”

Exploring the Relationship Between Exercise and Weight Loss

Contrary to common belief, research suggests that exercise alone has a relatively modest impact on weight loss (although it may play a crucial role in weight maintenance). Studies demonstrating weight loss from exercise typically involve significant activity levels and high intensity.

Current public health guidelines recommend a minimum of 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly for weight loss. However, even with this recommended amount, the results may not be drastic. A 2022 analysis of 25 trials concluded that consistent aerobic exercise over at least 3 months led to modest reductions in waist size, averaging just over 1 inch in overweight or obese adults.

Notably, the weekend warriors in the recent study exerted more effort and spent longer durations exercising compared to individuals who spread their workouts throughout the week.
