Andy Russell, the legendary linebacker who achieved Super Bowl success with the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout his NFL tenure, has passed away at the age of 82. Reports confirm that Russell passed away on Thursday evening in Pittsburgh.
A standout member of the renowned Steel Curtain defense, Russell earned the title of team MVP in 1971. Over his impressive 12-year NFL career, he made seven appearances in the Pro Bowl and secured victories in Super Bowls IX and X.
Originally drafted in 1963 from the University of Missouri, Russell briefly left the Steelers after his rookie season to fulfill ROTC military commitments from his college days. He rejoined the team in 1966 and continued playing until his retirement after the 1976 season. Funeral arrangements for Russell are currently pending announcement.
Despite initial hesitations, Russell eventually embraced the iconic Terrible Towel, as explained by Myron Cope. Stay tuned with Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 for further updates on this developing situation. For real-time news updates, download the WTAE mobile app.
