In a disturbing incident that took place in Stewartville, Minnesota, a woman named Samantha Petersen, 35, is facing a total of 21 charges following an SUV collision with a horse and buggy that resulted in the tragic deaths of two children and injuries to two others. These charges include criminal vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of drugs, and fleeing the scene of the accident. The details regarding her custody or legal representation have not been disclosed at this time. Neither Samantha Petersen nor her sister have made any public statements as of Tuesday evening.
Information retrieved from court documents suggests that Petersen attempted to mislead law enforcement into believing that her twin sister was actually the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, possibly in an effort to evade legal consequences and avoid imprisonment.
According to the official statement, Petersen was behind the wheel of a silver SUV on a rural road near Minneapolis on the morning of Sep. 25 when the collision occurred, resulting in the buggy being flung into a ditch. Tragically, the incident claimed the lives of two children aged 11 and 7, while a 13-year-old suffered facial injuries and a 9-year-old sustained a broken shoulder, internal injuries, concussion, and bleeding in the brain. Additionally, the horse pulling the buggy also perished in the collision.
Eye-witnesses who stopped to assist at the scene reported observing two women with similar appearances—both with blonde hair. One eyewitness described one woman wearing a black coat, black leggings, and sandals, while the other, later identified as Samantha Petersen, donning a red uniform from a local grocery store. This discrepancy in attire prompted further investigations by the sheriff’s office.
Upon further questioning by authorities, Sarah Petersen, the twin sister, claimed responsibility for the accident, stating that she had been the one driving the silver SUV at the time of the collision. She further mentioned that her driver’s license was in a different vehicle, not the one involved in the fatal crash. However, a crucial moment occurred during an interview with a sheriff’s deputy when Samantha Petersen, while monitored by a tape recorder, expressed suspicions that law enforcement was beginning to see through their deceitful plan. She mistakenly believed that the deputies would not be able to distinguish between the two sisters, thus allowing her to avoid accountability for her actions.
Ultimately, the fabricated narrative created by the Petersen sisters began to unravel as the truth surrounding the tragic event gradually came to light.
