1. TTC report: Why diversity initiatives matter

Increasing the diversity of tech teams is often viewed as a mere checkbox exercise, and there are still businesses without dedicated initiatives to improve diversity within their organizations.

Data from the Tech Talent Charter indicates that businesses fostering diversity within their organizations have a more diverse workforce.

Both women and ethnic minorities are better represented in the tech workforce of TTC signatories compared to the wider UK tech workforce, and these figures have continued to increase within TTC companies over the past year.

2. Government must take the lead on STEM diversity

Efforts to increase diversity across science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) fields have been largely ineffective, prompting calls for the government to intervene.

The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee (STC) conducted an inquiry in 2021 and produced a report in 2023 suggesting that the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology should focus on increasing diversity in STEM sectors going forward.

3. More office days leads to fewer women, says Nash Squared

Women’s reluctance to pursue careers in technology can be attributed to various reasons, including a lack of accessible role models and misconceptions about tech roles. Furthermore, the shift from office to home working during the pandemic has had an impact on women’s participation in the tech workforce.

Nash Squared found that mandating office days would deter women from working for certain companies, as it would eliminate the flexibility needed to manage their work-life balance. The Tech Talent Charter also discovered that care commitments are causing women to drop out of the tech sector.
