CEOs around the world are talking about increasing diversity in their businesses, but one founder is going against the grain.
Lululemon’s billionaire founder Chip Wilson believes that exclusivity is more important than inclusivity. He criticizes the company he stepped down from 10 years ago, saying, “They’re trying to become like the Gap, everything to everybody,” he told Forbes.
Despite Wilson’s controversial opinions, Lululemon has seen a $4 billion increase in net worth since 2020 due to the rise in value of its stock.
Wilson has a history of making controversial comments, including anti-Asian, sexist, and fatphobic remarks, and he has faced significant backlash in the past. Regardless, Lululemon has made efforts to be more inclusive in recent years.
The company has formed a new department known as Inclusion Diversity, Equity, and Action, or IDEA, to increase diversity and promote inclusivity. However, some employees have alleged that the company’s efforts are more about protecting its image than making real change.
