The golf world was buzzing this year when Rory McIlroy shockingly changed his mind about LIV Golf. His reversal of opinion drew some good-natured teasing from Brooks Koepka and his wife, but others, like Phil Mickelson, responded more supportively.
Phil Mickelson, known for his active presence on Twitter, took a different approach this time and encouraged others to do the same. In a tweet, he stood by McIlroy and prompted everyone to focus on building a positive future instead of dwelling on the past.
“This quote and the many others made today by Rory [McIlroy] probably weren’t easy to say. Let’s not use this as an opportunity to pile on,” Mickelson wrote. “Rather, It’s time for me and others to let go of our hostilities and work towards a positive future.”
McIlroy openly shared how LIV Golf had brought to light the PGA Tour’s weaknesses, going so far as to criticize himself for judging others who joined the Saudi circuit.
Mickelson’s tweet acknowledged this and urged everyone to remember the bigger picture.
“Rahm’s signing is turning into a bridge to bring both sides together, as evidenced by the many comments today and a month ago about changing the rules for the Ryder Cup so Jon and others can play, so let’s use it as such,” he wrote. “Until an agreement is reached, it will be business as usual for both sides, but hopefully without the needless disdain.”
The ultimate goal is to bridge the divide in golf and find a common ground, as this division is detrimental to the game. McIlroy may have had this in mind when sharing his comments, and perhaps Mickelson realizes the same after his tweet.
The needless disdain that has persisted since LIV Golf’s launch two years ago may finally come to an end if influential voices like Mickelson’s continue to advocate for unity.
