Latest from Blizzard: Microsoft Cancels Exciting New Survival Game
This week brought a disappointing announcement from Microsoft as they laid off 1,900 workers in their video game division, including employees from Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda, both of which have been recently acquired.
One of the biggest blows from this announcement is the cancellation of the unannounced survival game that Blizzard has been quietly developing for over six years. This new IP, announced in 2022, never received an official title or a trailer but boasted the potential to be just as groundbreaking as Overwatch, Blizzard’s last new IP which launched back in 2016.
Despite the lack of official details about this new title, the small collection of concept art images that have been released already had gamers and industry insiders buzzing with excitement about the game’s potential. Unfortunately, we will never get to experience what was set to be a highly-anticipated new addition to the survival game genre.
These recent layoffs and project cancellations are not unique to Blizzard. Other major industry players such as Riot Games, Amazon-owned Twitch, and Unity have also been making significant cuts to their workforce, marking a larger trend in the gaming world.
This news comes on the heels of Blizzard president Mike Ybarra’s announced departure from the company, signaling a period of major change and uncertainty for the company and its current and former employees.
