Exciting news from Turkey as Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has named deputy central bank Governor Fatih Karahan as Turkey’s new central bank governor! This official appointment was announced in the early hours of Saturday via the official gazette.
Karahan’s appointment came shortly after central bank governor Hafize Gaye Erkan announced her resignation on Friday night, citing the need to protect her family amid a “reputation assassination”.
Fatih Karahan, only 42 years old, holds a University of Pennsylvania economics PhD and has an impressive resume, including nearly a decade of experience as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. According to his biography on the central bank website, Karahan also taught as an adjunct professor at Columbia University and New York University, and worked for Amazon (NASDAQ:) as a principal economist in 2022.
This appointment is not Karahan’s first involvement with the central bank, as Erdogan had previously appointed him as one of the three new deputy governors in July last year.
