Embracing Creativity in Manchester
Immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene of Manchester, where old factories have been transformed into artists’ studios and a spirit of rebellious creativity abounds. One such artist is Bhaggie Patel, the co-founder of Imprints of Earth ceramics studio. According to her, working with clay is not just a creative outlet but also a therapeutic experience.
In a one-on-one throwing class with Bhaggie, I had the chance to mold clay into functional and beautiful pieces. Despite my initial struggles and doubt, the process soon became a meditative exercise. Bhaggie explains that engaging in creative hobbies can have significant physical and mental health benefits, reducing stress and anxiety while fostering positive emotions and problem-solving skills.
The Healing Power of Arts and Crafts
Bhaggie’s personal journey with ceramics is a testament to the healing power of arts and crafts. After the loss of her husband, she turned to pottery as a form of therapy and self-expression. Her creations, ranging from smoke-fired vases to raku teapots, reflect her journey of learning to let go, embracing imperfections, and finding beauty in the process.
Imprints of Earth is just one of the many creative spaces in Manchester, housed within the Manchester Craft and Design Centre. Visitors can participate in classes and workshops to create their own unique pieces, from leather purses to glass sun catchers. The centre is a hub of artistic activity, with different studios offering diverse experiences, such as cyanotype workshops at The Cyan Studio.
The Manchester Craft and Design Centre
Located in the historic Smithfield Market building, the Manchester Craft and Design Centre is a visual treat. The atrium, filled with natural light filtering through the glass roof, creates a welcoming ambiance for visitors. From jewelry studios to pottery workshops, the centre encapsulates Manchester’s artistic spirit and provides a space for both artists and enthusiasts to explore their creativity.
