Historically, I have expressed concern regarding VCs’ enthusiasm for climate change and emphasized that startups should strive to cease to exist. However, providing practical guidance for startup founders on creating sustainable companies amidst an impending climate crisis has been a challenge for me.
Amit Paul and Nils von Heijne have emerged as key figures in this space, dedicating several years to reevaluating traditional company formation and contemplating alternative approaches. Hailing from Sweden, they have introduced a groundbreaking organizational structure known as a regenerative community organism (RCO). This innovative model not only serves as a theoretical concept but also aspires to be a hands-on strategy for embedding sustainability into the core of business operations. By incorporating regenerative and circular principles into the company’s fabric, the RCO model strives to establish a new standard of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship.
The Swedish authorities have tentatively endorsed this framework, with the creation of the first RCO-based company, Innrwrks, by Paul and von Heijne. Innrwrks seeks to serve as a blueprint for other startups looking to adopt a similar model, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in the corporate world.
Sweden’s approval of the RCO model signals progress in the global sustainability movement, offering companies a government-supported template for developing more eco-friendly businesses.
Concept Origins
The inception of the RCO model can be linked to Paul and von Heijne’s brainstorming sessions at business school, during which they explored the shortcomings of existing business structures in addressing environmental issues. They noticed that while the focus on sustainability was growing, many startup initiatives only scratched the surface and failed to address the fundamental causes of environmental degradation.
With a background in environmental science, Paul has been a vocal advocate for environmentally-friendly practices that not only minimize harm but also aid in restoration efforts. His career has been dedicated to bridging the gap between environmental preservation and profitability, including roles at the Environmental Defense Fund and CodeGreen Solutions, which promotes low-carbon pathways in real estate.
On the other hand, von Heijne boasts a track record as a serial entrepreneur with multiple co-founder positions across various companies that aim to drive change in pivotal problem areas. He also serves as an early-stage investor focusing on sustainable startups through Svärd von Heijne.
Reflecting on his experiences, von Heijne commented on the conventional business narrative prevalent in business schools, highlighting the focus on rapid scaling and financial gains as the primary objectives. He emphasized the need for a shift towards a more holistic approach to business development.
