Formula 1 Engine Regulations Update
This year, the F1 Commission has decided to increase the quota of engines per car to four, as the calendar expands from 22 to 24 races. Last year, cars were allowed three power units. Enrico Gualtieri, Ferrari’s engine director, reveals that this change happened right before the sporting rules were finalized.
“It was three until the last minute,” stated Gualtieri. “We were clearly prepared to start the season under those conditions. There was this proposal in the final F1 Commission meeting and ultimately I think there was a broad consensus to have four engines.”
Preparation and Approach
Gualtieri explains that this adjustment does not alter Ferrari’s preparation for 2024, even though there will be some added reliability comfort: “Between three and four, our approach wouldn’t have really changed. That’s what we were gearing up for with three, and that’s still what we’re gearing up for with four.”
“So, I don’t think our overall approach would have changed much. It would have definitely impacted, I’d say, the effort and challenge each unit would face because it’s a matter of mileage and having an additional unit.”
“But for us, the overall approach would have been exactly the same: continue the project, operate the product at its maximum performance level under all conditions. We wouldn’t have altered that.”
