The Asian swing of the 2024 LPGA season kicks off with the Honda LPGA Thailand event at the Siam Country Club Old Course in Chonburi, Thailand. Reigning champion and current World No. 1 Lilia Vu faced challenges on Day 1, along with many Team USA Solheim Cup members in the field. While Vu posted a 1-over 73 to tie for 60th place, Jennifer Kupcho and Cheyenne Knight also struggled with 1-over 73 and 3-over 75 scores, respectively.
Among the six Team USA members competing, only Andrea Lee, Allisen Corpuz, and Danielle Kang managed to finish under par. Kang performed the best among them, carding a 3-under 69 and sitting tied for 19th place, trailing Peiyun Chein by five shots.
Despite a bogey on the 2nd hole, Kang bounced back with three birdies in her next five holes, adding another birdie on the 13th. A bogey on the 15th was countered with a birdie on the 18th, ending her round on a positive note. Lee and Corpuz both finished with 2-under 70s, with Corpuz excelling in the back nine with five birdies in her last five holes.
Although the Americans faced challenges on the course, there is still hope for improvement. The leader after Day 1, Chien, shot an impressive 8-under 64, tying her career-best score. Her performance opens up opportunities for others to make a move up the leaderboard.
Chien expressed confidence in her ability to play well on this course, emphasizing the importance of approaching each shot with precision. Her previous success on the tour, with five top 10 finishes last year, adds to her credibility as a contender in this tournament.
Overall, the first day of the Honda LPGA Thailand event showcased a mix of challenges and potential for the American players. The competition is fierce, and with the unpredictability of golf, anything can happen as the tournament progresses.
