The diminishing magnitudes of smaller tremors from around Mv 2 to 0 between 1995 and 2006 were attributed to the establishment of sophisticated seismic networks like Hi-net during that period.

Their findings, detailed in the journal Earthquake Research Advances, shed light on the application of the LURR method, pioneered by senior author Xiangchu Yin, in seismic studies worldwide.

This innovative approach, rooted in damage mechanics, harnesses seismic responses to tidal stress fluctuations caused by celestial bodies to assess the mechanical condition of the Earth’s crust. Liu, mentored by Yin, observed a remarkable correlation between the variations in LURR preceding the Mw7.5 earthquake and the theoretical projections.
