Insight from Jeff Probst Prior to “Survivor: Winners at War”
Over the course of almost 24 years, the loyal fans of Survivor have continued to champion the original competition series, propelling it beyond its reality TV counterparts in terms of strategy and endurance, with the 46th season set to debut on CBS and Paramount+ with a special two-hour premiere on Feb. 28.
Unless you’ve been eliminated from the game, you’re likely familiar with the fact that host Jeff Probst has presided over some of the most intense tribal councils in the show’s history, extinguishing torches and orchestrating blindsides since day one. As the upcoming season approaches, Probst has hinted at introducing new twists to the game.
Reflecting on his recent seasons as a kinder, more compassionate host, he shared with Entertainment Weekly his shift in perspective post-pandemic, stating, “I was definitely full of positivity, and I wanted to be a show that parents felt good about watching with their kids.”
However, with the 46th season participants hinting at an explosive and dramatic season ahead, Probst is gearing up to bring back his tougher demeanor at tribal council. “That side of me is resurfacing,” Probst remarked about his renewed focus on challenging contestants before voting them out. “I’m prepared to step back into that role, engage in the competition, and foster meaningful interactions. So, in the upcoming season, viewers can expect to witness a more assertive approach from me, and I hope the contestants appreciate the banter and rivalry.”
Curious to uncover the stakes of the game? While it’s common knowledge that the ultimate winner of Survivor secures a significant cash prize by outsmarting, outlasting, and outplaying their opponents, even those who endure a brief period of deprivation and exposure on the show still walk away with a monetary reward.

Selection Process for Contestants
Every season, tens of thousands of individuals apply to participate in the show, and the casting team curates a diverse group of Survivor enthusiasts alongside individuals, often from the modeling or acting industry, who are recruited for the competition. Nevertheless, the recruited players must undergo the standard casting procedures.
“Interestingly, we receive numerous applications from repeat applicants each year,” former casting director Lynne Spillman, who worked on the show from its inception until 2018, disclosed to Reality Wanted.
Presently, host Jeff Probst is directly involved in the casting process.
“Typically, the process unfolds as follows,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly. “We connect via Zoom, and they share details about their lives. Often, in those initial moments, I find myself pondering the same question…’How have they achieved so much at such a young age?”
