The gripping video shows the tense chase as the shark frantically tries to escape while the orca pursues relentlessly, eventually disappearing beneath the waves. Emerging shortly after, the orca is seen swimming away with the shark’s liver clenched in its powerful jaws.

A groundbreaking study featured in the African Journal of Marine Science, published on March 1, has confirmed this extraordinary event as the first documented instance of a lone orca (Orcinus orca) successfully hunting and devouring a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) without the support of its pod members.

The remarkable encounter occurred in June 2023 when a group of researchers aboard a tourist vessel spotted two orcas, affectionately named Port and Starboard due to their distinctive collapsed dorsal fins, near Seal Island in South Africa. These two orcas have gained notoriety for their aggressive behavior toward great white sharks, particularly relishing in feasting on their nutrient-rich livers. This newfound behavior has prompted great whites to steer clear of their once-favored hunting grounds.

Upon approaching the orcas, the researchers were greeted by an oily residue on the water’s surface, accompanied by diving seabirds and a telltale scent of shark liver lingering in the air. Speculation arose that the orcas had already taken down a shark before the researchers’ arrival, a hypothesis supported by the unmistakable odor that permeated the air.

Lead author of the study, Alison Towner, remarked on the distinctive smell of shark liver, indicating that once experienced, it is an aroma that cannot be easily forgotten. In a recent observation, a juvenile white shark, measuring 8 feet in length, was spotted at the surface being pursued by Starboard, one of the killer whales. The scene unfolded with the killer whale using its power to push the shark forward using its pectoral fin while the shark thrashed on the surface, displaying a brutal yet effective method of predation.

By grabbing hold of the shark’s pectoral fin and shaking it aggressively, Starboard managed to tear open the shark precisely in the right location to extract its liver. The precision and efficiency of the killer whale’s tactics were truly astounding to witness firsthand.

Shortly after the incident, a shark cage diving boat in the vicinity witnessed Starboard swimming by with a piece of peach-colored liver in its mouth, tainted with blood. Port, the other killer whale, remained at a distance of around 330 feet throughout the predation activity and did not partake in the hunt.

The encounter between the orcas and the shark left a lasting impact on Esther Jacobs, who reflected on the intense and emotional experience of witnessing such a powerful predator-prey interaction in the wild.
