Improving Performance at Phoenix Raceway: A New Beginning for Toyota
Toyota faced challenges on shorter tracks last season, with only one victory on tracks a mile in length or less, thanks to Denny Hamlin at fall Bristol. Particularly, Phoenix Raceway has been a struggle for the group, especially since it hosts the annual series championship race.
Excitingly, Hamlin and Toyota showcased a promising performance on Friday. Hamlin ranked second in average speed, with Tyler Reddick and John Hunter Nemechek also in the top five. Among drivers who completed at least 10 consecutive laps, Bubba Wallace, Christopher Bell, and Nemechek led the way for Toyota.
Positive Progress
Hamlin expressed satisfaction with his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team’s performance, noting the improvements made for the car at Phoenix Raceway. He highlighted the team’s efforts to experiment with different setups to enhance their performance at the track where they have historically struggled.
Seeing other Toyota drivers demonstrate speed on the track was a significant step in the right direction for Hamlin. He emphasized the importance of performance on the speed chart over subjective aerodynamic feel, signaling a collective effort within the Toyota camp to elevate their performance.
Adapting to New Rules
Friday’s practice session also marked the introduction of this year’s new aero rules for all road courses and most oval tracks under 1.058 miles in length. Cup cars now feature a simplified diffuser, 2023 short track/road course splitter stuffers, removal of engine panel strakes, a 3-inch spoiler, and simplified diffuser strakes.
While practice conditions did not fully simulate race scenarios, Hamlin noted slight improvements with the new rules package, especially in traffic situations. The changes were not groundbreaking, but they hinted at a better overall performance with the updated package.
Looking Ahead
As teams gear up for Sunday’s race, the effects of the new rules package will become more apparent. Fans and drivers alike will observe how these adjustments influence the on-track competition and strategize accordingly to make the most of the enhancements.
Overall, the recent progress at Phoenix Raceway signals a new beginning for Toyota and its drivers, offering hope for a competitive season ahead. Stay tuned for an exciting race day as teams put these enhancements to the test on the track.
