The Shimmering World of Customized Instruments
Zoe Brodie-James is a creative force in the world of glitz and glamour. Since 2002, she has been transforming microphones, guitars, and accessories into dazzling pieces adorned with crystals for the film, TV, and music industries through her company, Crystal Skins.
Notably, her sparkling creations have graced the screens of millions on popular TV shows like The X-Factor. One of her most eye-catching microphones is currently on display at Madame Tussauds in London, in the hands of a wax figure of the iconic Taylor Swift.
The inspiration behind Brodie-James’ intricate rhinestoning work stems from Taylor Swift herself, who famously used a bejeweled guitar during her Fearless tour in 2009. This led to a unique request from a dedicated fan who desired a similar sparkling decoration for the world’s most valuable portable commode.
While the customization of guitars may be a more specialized niche compared to mics and phone cases, Brodie-James has curated an impressive collection of uniquely adorned stringed instruments. From a color-changing Jackson Dinky to a crimson double-necked SG, her designs showcase a blend of luxury and creativity.
Reflecting on her journey, Brodie-James recalls her humble beginnings with a mere £35 guitar for a photo shoot in Italy. Despite initial hesitation when faced with customizing a cherished Cherry Red Gibson Flying V owned by a Prince-like collector, she embraced the challenge and brought new life to the instrument.
Influenced by the opulent style of artists like Liberace and country music legends like Dolly Parton, Brodie-James continues to push the boundaries of customization with her dazzling creations. Her work exemplifies a unique blend of artistry and innovation in the world of customized instruments.
