Nathan Eovaldi Continues to Shine in Spring Training
In Tempe, Arizona, Nathan Eovaldi of the Rangers has been impressing onlookers with his performance this spring. Despite a small sample size, he has shown no signs of rust, allowing only five runs (four earned) on seven hits and five walks with 10 strikeouts in three spring starts totaling 9 2/3 innings. In a recent game against the Angels, he threw an estimated 83-84 pitches, his longest outing during the Cactus League so far.
Eovaldi, known for his intense competitiveness, wasn’t completely content with his performance against the Angels. Even though he issued four walks, he expressed that he felt physically strong and focused on refining his game. Facing a strong Angels lineup, Eovaldi acknowledged the importance of fine-tuning his skills to compete at his peak.
Looking ahead to the regular season, Eovaldi is poised to lead the Rangers as the Opening Day starter against the Cubs on March 28. With an impressive 2023 season under his belt, where he achieved a 3.63 ERA in 25 starts and earned another All-Star selection along with a World Series victory, Eovaldi has set the bar high for himself in Texas.
Beyond his on-field performance, Eovaldi’s impact goes beyond his stats. He is dedicated to helping his teammates improve and reach their full potential. One such example is Marc Church, a young pitcher vying for a spot in the bullpen. Church, Texas’ No. 23 prospect, values Eovaldi’s mentorship and wealth of experience.
Church reflects on Eovaldi’s guidance, particularly in identifying cues from opposing batters, a skill honed over Eovaldi’s more than a decade-long career in the majors. Their mentor-mentee relationship began last season when Eovaldi joined the Rangers, and Church was a non-roster invitee to his first Major League camp. Eovaldi’s willingness to share his knowledge and insights has left a lasting impression on Church, who is eager to absorb all he can from the seasoned veteran.
