UFC champion and MMA legend Conor McGregor has set tongues wagging with a recent picture and caption on X, which hinted at a potential foray into Irish politics.
McGregor was praised for his recent statements on social media regarding the government’s handling of an attack involving an Algerian immigrant in Dublin.
His comments came amid riots protesting the country’s immigration laws, which led to a rebuttal from the Irish Garda commissioner. McGregor expressed his disapproval, highlighting the lack of action in response to the “mentally deranged non-national” attack, and asserting the need for change.
Several figures, including political activist Robby Starbuck, urged McGregor to pursue a new role in Irish leadership, emphasizing the need for “sanity” in the country.
Despite removing his initial posts, McGregor reaffirmed his commitment to Ireland and lamented the unrest in the country, prompting a strong backlash which reportedly led to investigations of “online hate speech.”
Amid criticism from Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin, McGregor dismissively fired back, effectively deepening the controversy.
