Feel like you can never get enough sleep? You’re not alone. The holidays, work deadlines, and family obligations can leave you feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. But don’t underestimate the power of quality sleep when it comes to boosting your immune system to help you stay healthy.
According to Kara Wada, MD, an immunologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, the immune system is an intricate network that plays a vital role in protecting your body from harmful germs. When you’re well-rested, your immune system has a better chance at recognizing and fighting off infections. That’s why getting enough sleep is crucial – especially during cold and flu season.
How does sleep support the immune system? “Your body repairs and recovers during sleep,” Dr. Wada explains. While you’re asleep, your body produces new protective cells and proteins that help regulate your immune function. Without enough sleep, your body may struggle to muster up the energy needed to fight off infections, making you more susceptible to getting sick.
And when you’re already sick, your body’s signals promoting sleep will likely increase, encouraging you to rest and recover. On the other hand, lack of sleep can hamper your immune system’s ability to prevent infections, according to W. Christopher Winter, MD, a sleep medicine physician.
