2023: The Year of Record-breaking Ransomware Attacks

The threat landscape in 2023 saw a dramatic increase in the number of victims falling prey to ransomware or cyber extortion attacks, as threats such as Clop/Cl0p targeted vulnerabilities in managed file transfer services, leading to a 46% rise in victims, according to the latest Orange Cyberdefense report, Security Navigator 2024. This surge in attacks also affected a higher number of large enterprises, but small and medium-sized organizations made up almost half of the total victims.

Geographically, most victims were found in English-speaking countries, particularly the US, although substantial increases were also observed in India, Oceania and Africa. The findings of the report indicate that detection and containment of these attacks remain a significant challenge to businesses and organisations, but Orange is committed to increasing awareness and providing support to prepare for and fight against such attacks.

As new threats emerge, law enforcement faces the challenge of tracking a variety of extortion groups, with many newcomers appearing, and a number of others fading away. Orange highlighted that the past 12 months may have seen the highest ransomware body count, emphasizing the critical need for businesses and organizations to understand and prepare for these evolving cyber threats.
