Research suggests that extreme mood changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease may be driven by brain inflammation. A gradual buildup of abnormal proteins called amyloid-beta and tau in the brain is thought to trigger a cascade of events leading to cognitive decline and mood problems. However, evidence now suggests that inflammation in the brain may also play a role in the development of Alzheimer’s. Throughout the study, scientists are providing evidence that neuropsychiatric symptoms of Alzheimer’s are directly associated with microglia activation. Research into the role inflammation plays in the development of Alzheimer’s could lead to more targeted treatments for the disease, the researchers say. Understanding the link between brain inflammation and Alzheimer’s symptoms could lead to more effective treatments for difficult-to-treat symptoms like irritability, agitation, anxiety, and depression. In the study, researchers found that participants with more severe neuropsychiatric symptoms had greater levels of microglial activation and more substantial signs of inflammation than those with milder symptoms, affecting three regions of the outer layer of the brain.
