The American Hospital Association slams the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ cybersecurity strategy, stating it would have negative effects on hospitals post-cyberattacks. The strategy paper calls for new cybersecurity requirements and voluntary goals for hospitals while proposing Medicare and Medicaid funding to improve cybersecurity. HHS plans to enforce these requirements with financial consequences and increase civil monetary penalties for HIPAA violations. AHA acknowledges the need for federal support but opposes mandatory cybersecurity requirements for hospitals. Looking ahead, HHS recently released a Cybersecurity Toolkit for Healthcare and Public Health to combat rising cyber attacks.
