The 5th-generation Toyota Prius, which was unveiled late last year, has been named the 2023 Japan Car of the Year.
Out of the 360 votes, the Prius managed to beat the BMW X1, which received 150 votes, and the Honda ZR-V, which received 100 votes, to claim the prestigious prize.
Although the BMW X1 missed out on the 2023 JCOTY, it did win the “Import Car of the Year” award for the luxury Compact SUV category.
The Mitsubishi Delica Mini took home the Design Car of the Year award, while the Nissan Serena was honored with the Technology Car of the Year accolade.
This award is given to newly released or redesigned cars in the Japanese market from November 1 of the previous year to October 31 of the current year.


The latest 5th-generation Toyota Prius, unveiled on November 16, 2022, has been crowned the “2023 Import Car of the Year” (JCOTY), securing 360 votes and beating the BMW X1 and Honda ZR-V.
Also part of the “10 Best” cars selected by 60 jurors were the Toyota Alphard MPV, Nissan Serena, Subaru Crosstrek, Mitsubishi Delica Mini, Abarth 500e, Maserati Grecale, and Volkswagen ID.4.

As for the BMW X1, it may have missed out on the coveted 2023 JCOTY, but it did win the Import Car of the Year award, while the Mitsubishi Delica Mini claimed the Design Car of the Year accolade.
The Nissan Serena was honored with the Technology Car of the Year award for its new e-Power system and Pro Pilot 2.0 driver assist system, following the all-electric Sakura minivehicle’s win of the 2022-2023 Japan Car of the Year award.
Since 1980, this annual award has been presented to newly released or redesigned Japanese and non-Japanese imported vehicles released from November 1 of the previous year to October 31 of the current year in the Japanese market.
