Amazon’s Top Execs Jump Ship: Another Loss for AWS in India and South Asia

Vaishali Kasture, the high-level executive appointed by Amazon to lead AWS in India and South Asia, has left the company, a source familiar with the matter informed TechCrunch. This departure comes only seven months after Kasture took on the top role.

Amazon did not respond immediately to requests for comment via email and phone. India is a crucial market for AWS, where the platform has actively pursued partnerships with hundreds of thousands of businesses in the second largest internet market in the world, as well as securing contracts with numerous government agencies.

In May of this year, the e-commerce behemoth indicated its plans to invest a staggering $12.7 billion into its cloud business in India by 2030, an amount that outstrips capital investments made by its competitors. For context, IDC projects that the entire public cloud services market in India will only reach $13 billion by 2026.

Kasture, who has been with Amazon for about five years, was appointed as the interim leader of commercial business at AWS India and South Asia in June of this year. The reason for her departure is not known at this time.

She was promoted to the top position after her predecessor, Puneet Chandok, suddenly left Amazon to take on a leadership role at Microsoft India. Until just two weeks ago, Kasture had been very positive and enthusiastic about the growth potential and momentum of Amazon Web Services in India.

“Our total planned investments in India will be more than $16.4 billion or 1.36 lakh crores by 2030, and we expect this to contribute $23 billion to India’s GDP by then,” she wrote in a LinkedIn post.

“In addition to investments in infrastructure and services, we are also investing in people and skilling and AWS has trained over 4 million people in India through various education and training programs.”
