A missile attack on a commercial oil tanker has taken place in the Red Sea near Yemen. The Norwegian-flagged STRINDA was struck by a missile fired from an area under Houthi control amid increasing attacks in the region. Despite the damage and fire onboard, no casualties have been reported. The United States is providing assistance in the wake of the attack. Yemen has been in crisis for almost a decade as a result of the ongoing war between the Houthi rebels and the internationally recognized government of Yemen, backed by Saudi-led coalition forces. The attacks stem from Israel’s war with Hamas. The Houthi rebels have threatened to target all ships traveling through the Red and Arab Seas in response to Israel’s actions against Palestinians in Gaza. The United States is taking action to combat the attacks, including imposing sanctions and increasing maritime forces to counter non-state actors in international waters.
