After a remarkable 22-year career, Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini has officially retired from professional soccer.
His decision to retire was announced by Los Angeles FC, where he spent the last 1.5 seasons following an illustrious 17-year tenure at Juventus. Chiellini also shared the news on social media, calling his career “the most beautiful and intense journey of my life.”
During his time at Juventus, Chiellini achieved remarkable success, winning nine consecutive Serie A titles and being named the Italian league’s top defender three times. His contributions also helped secure five Italian Cups and five Italian Super Cups for the Turin powerhouse.
Chiellini then made a major impact at LAFC, helping the team clinch the MLS Cup title and Supporters’ Shield in 2022. Although they fell short in the MLS Cup championship game, he also played a pivotal role in leading the team to the CONCACAF Champions League final.
LAFC general manager John Thorrington described Chiellini as “the best defender of his generation and an even better person,” emphasizing his significant impact on and off the field.
While Chiellini’s retirement was expected, especially after a successful tenure at LAFC, his future plans may involve a career in coaching or management.
In his social media announcement, Chiellini expressed his excitement for “new chapters, new challenges, and further important and exciting pages of life.”
Throughout his career, Chiellini made 117 appearances for Italy, showcasing his talent and skill on the international stage, including two World Cup appearances. He was also a key player in Italy’s victory at the European Championship in 2021.
Born in Pisa, Chiellini’s career began with Livorno before making a significant impact at Juventus, where he solidified his position as a top-tier defender until his retirement in the summer of 2022.
