Avira is currently releasing a solution for users of its antivirus software who experienced a complete lockup of their PCs following a recent update.
Recently, some users reported that their PCs froze up entirely after updating to the latest version of Avira. Many others echoed these complaints on Reddit and discovered that they had to uninstall Avira in safe startup in order to fix the problem.
Thankfully, Avira’s owner, NortonLifeLock (now Gen Digital), has confirmed the issue and is actively working on a fix. According to Heise.de, the problem was attributed to the company’s firewall rather than the antivirus software itself.
The lockup bug has made Avira, a traditionally high-quality antivirus program, a questionable choice for some users. If you’re affected by this bug and cannot wait for the fix, Windows Defender is a suitable alternative that will automatically take over once Avira is uninstalled. Furthermore, since 2019, Defender’s antimalware quality is on par with paid services.
