USDA Launches Working Lands Climate Corps to Train Future Conservation Leaders
In a recent announcement, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled the Working Lands Climate Corps, a key component of President Biden’s groundbreaking American Climate Corps initiative. This new program is designed to equip young individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to address climate change through sustainable agricultural practices, benefiting farmers and ranchers nationwide. The Working Lands Climate Corps aims to engage over 100 participants in its inaugural cohort, providing them with technical training and career opportunities in the realm of climate-smart agriculture.
Partnerships and Initiatives
The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has collaborated with AmeriCorps, The Corps Network, and the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) to implement the Working Lands Climate Corps program. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Xochitl Torres Small outlined the details of the initiative at the National Association of Conservation Districts annual gathering in San Diego. Notably, the American Climate Corps has already garnered significant interest, with over 50,000 individuals expressing their willingness to participate. Additionally, 2,200 individuals have taken part in informative sessions conducted by the American Climate Corps.
Building a Skilled Workforce
Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small emphasized the significance of the Working Lands Climate Corps in training a new generation of conservationists and climate leaders. She highlighted the program’s role in preparing individuals to leverage billions of dollars in funding allocated for climate-smart agricultural projects under President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. Through this initiative, participants can embark on rewarding careers within the USDA, contributing to sustainable practices in agriculture.
National Climate Objectives
President Biden’s National Climate Advisor, Ali Zaidi, commended the efforts of the American Climate Corps in engaging young Americans in addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The Working Lands Climate Corps, part of this larger initiative, underscores the administration’s commitment to empowering individuals to develop innovative solutions within the agricultural sector. By prioritizing collaboration with rural communities, the Biden-Harris Administration aims to cultivate a new cohort of leaders proficient in climate-smart agricultural practices.
A Vision for the Future
Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, drew parallels between the historical context of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the ongoing climate crisis faced by farmers. With a focus on equity, President Biden’s American Climate Corps is poised to train individuals for careers in climate resilience and clean energy, aligning with the urgent need for sustainable practices. The launch of the Working Lands Climate Corps signifies a pivotal step in mobilizing Americans to restore soil health and combat the impacts of climate change.
