Former NASA Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk, a space leader, passed away on November 23 at the age of 61 after battling pancreatic cancer.
His remarkable career with NASA spanned over three decades. Jurczyk held the prestigious position of associate administrator, the highest-ranking civil servant, from May 2018 until January 2021. He then served as acting administrator until his retirement in May 2021.
“Steve dedicated his life to solving daring spaceflight challenges and expanding humanity’s reach throughout the solar system. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and exceptional leadership. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
Prior to these roles, Jurczyk was the associate administrator for the Space Technology Mission Directorate and the director of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia.
Throughout his career, Jurczyk earned various awards and accolades, including a Distinguished Service Medal and Presidential Rank Awards. He was also a graduate of the University of Virginia with degrees in electrical engineering.
