TotalEnergies emerged as the undisputed leader in the realm of global utility-scale solar developers from July 2022 to June 2023, according to United States (US) research firm Mercom. With a staggering 41.3 GW of solar capacity in its project portfolio, the French energy company secured the top spot, as revealed in Mercom’s much-anticipated “Annual Global Report.”
Highlighting the company’s solar prowess, the report noted that TotalEnergies currently operates 12 GW of solar projects, with an additional 3.8 GW under construction and a whopping 25.5 GW in the pipeline. However, it’s worth noting that a “significant share” of TotalEnergies’ operational capacity is tied to its stakes in Clearway Energy Group, Casa dos Ventos, and Adani Green Energy, as indicated by the report.
Following closely in the footsteps of TotalEnergies is Italian renewable energy titan Enel Green Power, with an impressive 9.2 GW in its solar project portfolio. Meanwhile, Indian renewable company Adani Green – a subsidiary of Indian energy giant Adani Group – secured the third spot with a substantial 18.1 GW under its belt.
The report further ranks large-scale PV developers and projects based on operational capacity, spanning currently running projects, those under construction, and others awarded power purchase agreements (PPA), as highlighted in the press release by Mercom.
Underlining the urgency to meet renewable energy targets and address net zero initiatives, Mercom pointed out that a “significant number of projects” have been developed or planned, citing the increased emphasis on sustainability.
In terms of country-specific installations, the report cited China as the frontrunner with 86 GW of cumulative solar capacity – a remarkable 62.4% surge compared to the previous year. On the other hand, the US came in second, with 17.6 GW of installations, highlighting a slight 8.3% decrease from the year before, which Mercom attributed to the federal anti-circumvention investigation and the Uyghur Forced Labor Protection Act.
