The San Francisco 49ers are ramping up their defense after Monday’s disappointing 33-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Veteran defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day has joined the 49ers after being waived by the Los Angeles Chargers, as reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
Joseph-Day, a team captain for the Chargers, was waived on Friday, which came as a surprise considering his consistent performance this season with 3 sacks, 31 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 11 quarterback hits.
The 28-year-old had recently signed a three-year, $24 million contract with the Chargers as the franchise worked to strengthen its defense in the 2022 offseason.
Joseph-Day is the latest addition to the 49ers’ defense, joining Chase Young who arrived from the Washington Commanders last month.
Despite the loss to the Ravens, the 49ers remain in contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC, giving them the chance to secure a first-round bye.
Joseph-Day is expected to provide crucial depth for the 49ers on the defensive line while Arik Armstead is recovering from a foot injury.
The 49ers will finish the regular season against the Commanders and Los Angeles Rams, with Joseph-Day’s role in those matchups still uncertain.
The Rutgers product began his career with the Rams, winning a Super Bowl in 2022, before spending three seasons with the Chargers. Now, he’s looking to make an impact with the 49ers.
