Former NFL GM declares he would draft Caleb Williams over Peyton Manning originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Is Caleb Williams the standout quarterback to watch in the 2024 NFL draft class? That’s the big question on everyone’s minds.

Several pundits have labeled USC quarterback Caleb Williams as a “generational quarterback,” but his inconsistent performances this season have left some doubting his potential, especially after shaky games against Utah, Oregon, and Notre Dame.

In a hypothetical re-drafting scenario, former NFL GM Rick Spielman declared that he would take Williams over Peyton Manning and several other top quarterbacks. According to Spielman, Williams’ athleticism gives him an edge over previous greats like Manning, Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, and even Dan Marino, with the only exception being Andrew Luck.

With the Bears holding the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, there’s speculation that their early evaluations are leaning towards selecting Williams. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that sources within the program believe that the Bears will ultimately land on Williams or another top quarterback with the No. 1 pick.

Despite the draft buzz, Williams has not yet declared for the NFL draft and has until Jan. 15 to make that decision. While many around the league consider Williams to be the top quarterback prospect, the Bears are still in the early stages of their draft study.
