Missed Opportunity: Theresa May fails to reinvigorate her party

What a disappointment! Today’s Cabinet reshuffle was supposed to be Theresa May’s big chance to take charge after the election fiasco and re-energize the Conservative Party in the face of Jeremy Corbyn’s growing threat. Instead, she failed on both counts.

So what’s the big change? Well, David Lidington, a relatively unknown figure, will now take over as secretary of state for the Cabinet Office, with a whole bunch of new responsibilities. And don’t forget the dramatic shift of James Brokenshire stepping down due to health issues and being replaced by Karen Bradley.

But aside from that, it was all much ado about nothing. The press hyped it all up, ministers paraded around Downing Street, and in the end, everything remained the same. The heavy hitters, like Philip Hammond, Amber Rudd, and Boris Johnson, are all staying right where they are. David Davis is still the minister for Leaving the EU. There was some drama around a potential move for Chris Grayling, but that turned out to be a mistake.

This non-reshuffle just highlights Mrs. May’s lack of authority within her own party. She can’t get rid of the big names making blunders, she can’t even move around some of the more competent members. It’s all about the delicate balance of power, and some interesting name changes.

Instead of making real changes, Mrs. May seems more concerned with appearances and preserving the status quo. It’s all a bit of a letdown.
