Stunning Sofia Vergara is set to showcase her dramatic prowess as she steps into the role of infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in Netflix’s “Griselda.” Typically associated with comedic projects, the star is excited to venture into the dramatic genre through this unique opportunity.
“I’m always looking for characters because there’s not much that I can play with this stupid accent,” Vergara recently told the Los Angeles Times with her typical humor. “I can’t play a scientist or be in ‘Schindler’s List.’ My acting jobs are kind of limited.”
The search for roles is challenging for Vergara due to her accent, making Griselda a rare prospect to explore her dramatic range. The transition into the complex character demanded dedicated preparation, with the actress enlisting the help of renowned acting coach Nancy Banks, known for her work with stars such as Margot Robbie and Jennifer Aniston.
“I had no clue what it meant to have a process,” Vergara said. “It was tricky because I don’t have any real training as an actor. I was married to Joe [Manganiello], who is a classically trained actor. I would ask things and I would see how he would prepare. I was kind of always like, ‘What do real actors do? Can I do this?’”
Banks’ rigorous training led Vergara to approach her character from fresh perspectives, pushing her outside her comfort zone. As the Times points out: “What does the character need from the other character? What does my character dream about? What makes her laugh?”
The challenges were intense for Vergara, as she reveals her doubts: “The night before I was going to start shooting, I was sitting down in the living room and I thought, ‘Why the hell did I think I could do this?’”
“When I was in those scenes [as Griselda], it was like anger and a lot of things about my upbringing and where I come from and who I am,” she added.
“Griselda” streams Jan. 25 on Netflix.
