Breaking News: Former White House adviser Peter Navarro has been sentenced to four months in prison and fined $9,500 for contempt of Congress. This comes after he refused to comply with a House Jan. 6 committee subpoena. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta rejected Navarro’s claim that Trump had invoked executive privilege on his behalf and, he was convicted by a Washington, D.C., jury in September.
The Justice Department had asked Mehta to impose six months of imprisonment and a $200,000 fine, while Navarro requested no more than six months of probation and a $200 fine.
Prosecutors said in their sentencing memo that Navarro “chose allegiance to former President Donald Trump over the rule of law,” further linking his noncompliance to the Jan. 6 insurrection. Navarro cast the case as one involving novel issues that he intends to appeal, seeking to remain free while he challenges his convictions.
