Shocking AI-generated images of Taylor Swift‍ are making the rounds on social‌ media,‌ prompting X/Twitter to take action.

As fake⁢ explicit images of Taylor Swift‌ started spreading on X, her fans ⁣swiftly flooded the‌ platform with authentic images of the ⁢star to combat the fakes. This ⁤was⁤ an ‌ effort to ‍overshadow ⁤the fakes that were dominating searches;⁣ fans also reported the⁢ harmful images in large numbers, resulting in many accounts being banned for violating X policies.

X⁤ specifically prohibits the sharing of “synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context ⁢media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm.” And with these images having been viewed “tens of millions of times”⁣ before⁤ being removed from social media platforms, nothing on the internet can truly⁣ be considered‌ gone forever, whether fake or ⁤real.

This incident comes at a time of ⁣increasing concerns in the music⁢ industry (and beyond) about⁣ AI-generated images and videos that can contribute‌ to the spread of misinformation — especially as the United States approaches a presidential election year.

X ⁣has significantly reduced its moderation team since ⁤transitioning ⁣under Elon Musk’s rule,‍ primarily relying on user reporting and automated systems. However, most social media companies don’t have ‌solid plans in place to⁤ address the moderation ⁢of fakes. Similarly, Meta has cut back its‍ moderation teams that handled coordinated harassment and disinformation campaigns.

“This is indicative of a larger ⁤kind of fracturing of content moderation ‌and platform ⁢governance, because if all the ⁢stakeholders‌ — the‌ AI companies, social media companies, ⁣regulators, and civil society — ⁢are not talking⁤ about the same things and on the same page about how⁤ to address these⁣ issues, this type⁢ of content is just ⁣going to continue to proliferate,” said Ben Decker of digital⁣ investigations agency Memetica.

However, Taylor Swift has a unique ability to bring people (including legislators) together. Perhaps the targeting of a star as significant as⁤ Taylor Swift ‍will draw‍ more attention to issues surrounding ⁢AI-generated imagery.
