Shocking AI-generated images of Taylor Swift are making the rounds on social media, prompting X/Twitter to take action.
As fake explicit images of Taylor Swift started spreading on X, her fans swiftly flooded the platform with authentic images of the star to combat the fakes. This was an effort to overshadow the fakes that were dominating searches; fans also reported the harmful images in large numbers, resulting in many accounts being banned for violating X policies.
X specifically prohibits the sharing of “synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm.” And with these images having been viewed “tens of millions of times” before being removed from social media platforms, nothing on the internet can truly be considered gone forever, whether fake or real.
This incident comes at a time of increasing concerns in the music industry (and beyond) about AI-generated images and videos that can contribute to the spread of misinformation — especially as the United States approaches a presidential election year.
X has significantly reduced its moderation team since transitioning under Elon Musk’s rule, primarily relying on user reporting and automated systems. However, most social media companies don’t have solid plans in place to address the moderation of fakes. Similarly, Meta has cut back its moderation teams that handled coordinated harassment and disinformation campaigns.
“This is indicative of a larger kind of fracturing of content moderation and platform governance, because if all the stakeholders — the AI companies, social media companies, regulators, and civil society — are not talking about the same things and on the same page about how to address these issues, this type of content is just going to continue to proliferate,” said Ben Decker of digital investigations agency Memetica.
However, Taylor Swift has a unique ability to bring people (including legislators) together. Perhaps the targeting of a star as significant as Taylor Swift will draw more attention to issues surrounding AI-generated imagery.
