The White House is deeply concerned about the sexually explicit AI-generated images of pop star Taylor Swift going viral on social media.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre expressed her concern over the false images, stating, “While social media companies make their own independent decisions about content management, we believe they have an important role to play in enforcing their own rules to prevent the spread of misinformation and non-consensual, intimate imagery of real people.”
The press secretary also highlighted the disproportionate impact of lax enforcement on women and girls, who are often the main targets of online harassment and abuse.
A series of sexually graphic AI-generated images, featuring Swift in Kansas City Chiefs-themed scenarios, caused outrage on social media. Fans were appalled at the nude depictions of the singer with red and white body paint and explicit language displayed on the images. According to Breitbart News, this type of deepfake porn makes up 98 percent of all deepfake images and predominantly targets women.
Despite the rise in AI-generated explicit content, authorities have yet to find a solution. However, last May, Rep. Joseph Morelle introduced a bill seeking to make sharing deepfake porn illegal.
