The Power of Trump’s “Prayer Warriors”: Understanding the Spiritual Warfare behind MAGA

Donald Trump might be in charge of the Republican Party, but his power is not absolute.

Despite his unpopularity among many traditional Republicans and right-leaning independents, Trump and his neofascist MAGA movement have found growing support from the Christian right. This group, characterized by their devotion to spiritual warfare and conspiratorial ideas, has become a significant base of power for Trump and the Republican Party.

While some may write off the Christian right as mere participants in the “culture wars,” the movement is, in fact, a well-funded and highly organized force working to establish a White Christian theocracy in America and beyond. Their efforts include employing “spiritual warfare” and “prayer warriors” to combat what they see as evil forces, mainly Democrats, liberals, and secularists.

To further explore this connection between the Christian right, Trumpism, and the wider neofascist movement, I spoke with André Gagné, a Professor and Chair of Theological Studies at Concordia University. In our conversation, Gagné delves into the role of “prayer warriors” and “spiritual warfare” in the Christian right’s worldview, as well as their perception of power, politics, and society. He also warns of the Christian right’s belief in Trump as a prophetic figure and the potential implications of this ideology.
