At the age of 80, Joni Mitchell took the stage for her debut performance at the 2024 Grammys, showcasing her timeless song “Both Sides Now” in a memorable way.
Seated in a chair with a cane in hand, Mitchell was surrounded by a talented group of musicians, including Lucius, SistaStrings, Jacob Collier, Allison Russell, Blake Mills, and Brandi Carlile, who introduced her.
The performance started with Mitchell facing away from the audience, gradually turning to face the crowd as she began to sing.
The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, with notable celebrities like Meryl Streep and Dua Lipa captivated by Mitchell’s presence. The performance culminated in a standing ovation from the Grammys audience, with Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lipa rising to their feet in appreciation.
Host Trevor Noah joined Mitchell on stage, presenting her with the Grammy award for Best Folk Album, which she had won earlier in the evening.
Mitchell, who has accumulated 10 Grammy awards throughout her illustrious career, faced a health scare in 2015 when she experienced a life-threatening aneurysm. Despite the challenges, she persevered and made a triumphant return to the spotlight at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, marking her first full live performance in almost 20 years.
This comeback performance, featuring collaborations with Carlile and other musicians, was later released as a live album that ultimately secured her another Grammy win at the recent awards ceremony.
