People who are overweight or obese may feel overwhelmed by the idea of needing to lose a significant amount of weight to improve their health. However, even a small amount of weight loss can lead to noticeable health benefits.
Studies have shown that losing less than 10% of your total body weight can result in lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, alleviate joint pain, and improve cardiovascular health.
According to Melanie Jay, MD, an associate professor at New York University, losing 5% to 10% of your body weight may seem modest, but the effects are clinically significant. In some cases, positive changes can be seen with as little as a 2% weight loss. Dr. Jay emphasizes that even a minimal weight loss can greatly enhance one’s quality of life.
Immediate Health Benefits
For instance, losing just 2% to 5% of body weight can lead to improvements in triglyceride levels for individuals who are overweight or have obesity and type 2 diabetes. A study involving over 5,100 people with diabetes found that this modest weight loss also resulted in better systolic blood pressure readings.
Furthermore, shedding excess weight can have tangible effects on daily life. Research has shown that overweight or obese older adults with knee osteoarthritis experienced reduced knee pain when they lost an average of around 6% of their total body weight. Each pound lost can result in a substantial decrease in the load on the knee during daily activities.
Exercise Benefits
While losing 10 pounds may not seem significant, especially for someone weighing 200 pounds, it can have a major impact on exercise performance. David Sarwer, PhD, from Temple University, explains that a 5% weight loss can decrease pressure on the lower body during physical activity, allowing individuals to exercise for longer periods and more frequently, which is vital for sustaining weight loss.
This initial weight loss is a crucial step that can pave the way for more substantial weight loss. In addition to the physical benefits, the psychological boosts from achieving this milestone can be significant.
Comprehensive Health Improvements
Individuals who are overweight or obese and have type 2 diabetes may observe enhancements in HDL (good) cholesterol levels and diastolic blood pressure with even a small amount of weight loss. These improvements can have a lasting impact on overall health and well-being.
