Sony Music Publishing (SMP)‌ has officially entered ⁤the ⁢expanding music markets of North Africa ⁢and the Middle East with‍ the launch of its MENA division. The announcement of this ⁤new ⁣venture was made public through a statement released today. ‌The MENA division is⁤ headquartered in⁣ Dubai, United ⁤Arab Emirates, with Dounia Chaaban taking on the role of ⁣managing director.

Chaaban, who brings with⁣ her a wealth ⁤of experience ⁢from her time ⁢at Believe⁤ and Anghami, where she was involved in the partnership with⁤ Sony Music on Vibe ⁣Music Arabia in December‌ 2021,‍ will⁣ report to SMP’s SVP of international, Dan Nelson.

Expressing her⁤ enthusiasm for the new role, Chaaban stated,‍ “I am excited to‌ collaborate with the talented team at Sony Music ⁢Publishing to elevate the MENA music industry to new levels.‌ Together, we aim to cultivate a creative environment that encourages innovation and maximizes the region’s musical potential.”

Nelson ‌echoed Chaaban’s ⁢sentiments, affirming Sony Music Publishing’s ‍commitment⁣ to expanding its presence in the MENA region and creating opportunities for songwriters and artists. The music region has been identified ⁤by the ⁢International Federation of‍ the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) as the “fastest ⁣growing music region” globally, making it a focal point for ‍major music companies.

Warner Music ‌Group, for example, has been actively strengthening its footprint in MENA, with a focus on countries like the⁤ United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, where the⁢ music industry is rapidly evolving. The company’s investments in Dubai-based talent agency HuManagement and Rotana Music, as well as owning Qanawat Music, demonstrate its strategic approach to ‌the region.

Similarly, Universal Music Group⁤ expanded ⁤its presence in ⁤MENA ‌by launching ⁤Universal Arabic Music and acquiring Chabaka Music, a marketing and ⁢distribution company ⁣based in the United ⁣Arab Emirates with operations in Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.

As the⁣ music industry in MENA continues to flourish, major players like Sony‌ Music Publishing⁣ are seizing the‍ opportunities presented by ‌the region’s growth and are ‍poised to make a significant impact in the evolving landscape.
