Construction Woes at Tunbridge Wells Hospital
The construction of the student accommodation and teaching building at Tunbridge Wells Hospital faced setbacks, with an anticipated completion date in February 2022 delayed due to damp and mold issues. The construction site has been plagued by leaks, causing concerns among those involved.
The main contractor for the project, ESS Modular, underwent ownership changes, with ISG acquiring it in March 2022, only to be later sold to parent company Cathexis in December 2022. Despite these transitions, ESS Modular and ISG collaborated on the construction of the six-story building intended to accommodate 145 medical students and trainee doctors.
Sources close to the project revealed that the building has been marred by damp problems, leading to an uncomfortable situation that has been kept under wraps. The extent of the damage caused by water ingress has forced a halt in internal works until the external cladding is fully installed. However, the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust remains optimistic about the project, emphasizing the potential of the medical accommodation and teaching facility to attract and nurture future medical professionals.
While the Trust spokesperson acknowledged the challenges faced, they expressed confidence in addressing the issues and completing the project. They highlighted the importance of providing a conducive environment for medical students to live, learn, and work effectively during their placements. The Trust looks forward to welcoming the new cohort of 145 medical students once the facility is operational.
Despite the concerns raised by site sources, ESS declined to provide any comments on the situation. The ongoing construction work is expected to continue, with a renewed focus on resolving the existing damp issues to ensure a successful and timely completion of the project.
