Surprising the football community, Roy Istvan, longtime assistant to Jeff Stoutland, has exited the Philadelphia Eagles to take on the same role under Kevin Stefanski in the Cleveland Browns organization.

The Browns made the official announcement on their website, revealing Istvan’s new position as assistant offensive line coach, working alongside the Browns’ recently appointed offensive line coach, Andy Dickerson. Dickerson has stepped in for Bill Callahan, who previously served as the Eagles’ offensive line coach during Ray Rhodes’ tenure and now coaches under his son Brian, the newly appointed head coach of the Tennessee Titans.

Stoutland and Istvan’s connection spans over three decades, with Istvan having previously played and coached under Stoutland at Southern Connecticut State in the late 1980s. Istvan transitioned to the Eagles in 2019 after a lengthy coaching career in the college ranks.

Stoutland hinted at his return to Nick Sirianni’s coaching staff via a recent social media post, confirming he is the sole assistant coach from the 2023 Eagles cohort to join new coordinators Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio.

Notably, Istvan will reunite with familiar faces in Cleveland. The Browns recently appointed Duce Staley as their running backs coach, with Staley and Istvan previously working together at the Eagles under Doug Pederson’s leadership in 2019 and 2020. Additionally, Browns’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has previous ties with Istvan, and Browns’ general manager Andrew Berry formerly held a position as the Eagles’ vice president of football operations in 2019.

Among the 2023 Eagles staff, Istvan is the seventh assistant coach known to have parted ways with the team.

Other notable exits include offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, now serving as Commanders’ passing game coordinator, as well as defensive coordinators Sean Desai and Matt Patricia, whose current status remains undisclosed. Quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney has transitioned to Colts’ passing game coordinator, senior offensive assistant Marcus Brady has taken on the role of Chargers’ passing game coordinator, Tracy Rocker now coaches the defensive line under Titans’ defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, former Eagles’ secondary coach, while secondary coach D.K. McDonald has been appointed co-defensive coordinator at Kansas.

The fate of running backs coach Jemel Singleton, receivers coach Aaron Moorehead, tight ends coach Jason Michael, linebackers coach D.J. Eliot, and edge coach Jeremiah Washburn, along with several assistant position coaches and quality control coaches, remains uncertain.

During Istvan’s tenure with Stoutland, the Eagles witnessed four offensive linemen achieve a total of 11 Pro Bowl appearances, with players such as Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson, and Brandon Brooks earning prestigious accolades.
