TikTok has recently revealed the launch of its third annual #TikTokShortFilm competition, in collaboration with the Cannes Film Festival, offering a platform for TikTok creators to debut their short films to a global audience of over 1 billion individuals.
According to TikTok, creators are encouraged to participate in the competition from February 21st to March 15th, 2024, by submitting their original 1-minute plus videos in TikTok’s signature vertical format using the hashtags #TikTokShortFilm and #TikTokShortFilmCompetition. Winners in three categories – Grand Winner, Best Script, and Best Directing – will be chosen by a distinguished panel of judges and will have the opportunity to showcase their work and receive awards during the #TikTokShortFilm ceremony at the Cannes Film Festival.
An intriguing aspect of the competition is the requirement for videos to be in vertical format, aligning with TikTok’s recent focus on incorporating more landscape videos into the platform.
The Grand Winner will be awarded a cash prize of 10,000€ (approximately $10,700 USD), while winners in the Best Script and Best Directing categories will each receive 5,000€ ($5,350 USD) to support their ventures.
This year marks the inclusion of US creators for the first time, expanding the talent pool for the festival and offering additional opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. Past competition winners and participants have been able to kickstart their careers in the film industry, with the short film format serving as a valuable platform for emerging talents.
Notably, there has been a significant increase in the creation of videos with the hashtag #TikTokShortFilm, indicating a rise of nearly 180% compared to the previous year. This growth underscores TikTok’s efforts in fostering creative content within its ecosystem and providing exposure and opportunities for budding filmmakers.
The competition presents a unique chance for individuals to venture into the realm of cinema, connecting with a wider audience through their creative endeavors. For brands, it serves as a potential showcase of talented creators who could be ideal partners for future in-app collaborations.
