New Insights Revealed in Alec Baldwin Shooting Case
A recent courtroom testimony shed light on the tragic incident involving Alec Baldwin and the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust.” David Halls, a former first assistant director on the film, provided conflicting details about the final safety check on the revolver and who handed it to Baldwin during a rehearsal.
The assistant director, who also served as the safety coordinator on set, testified that the weapon supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed gave the revolver to Baldwin on two occasions. According to Halls, the revolver was initially unloaded, then loaded with dummy rounds and a live round. Baldwin inadvertently discharged the gun while aiming at Hutchins, resulting in her tragic death and injuring director Joel Souza.
Baldwin, who plays the lead role in “Rust,” is facing legal repercussions, as he was recently indicted by a grand jury for his involvement in the incident. Meanwhile, Gutierrez-Reed is on trial for charges of manslaughter and evidence tampering.
During his testimony, Halls mentioned that he did not witness Gutierrez-Reed directly handing the gun to Baldwin, but she informed him that she had loaded dummy rounds into the revolver. The details provided by Halls, who had previously pleaded no contest to negligent use of a firearm, are crucial in understanding the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
According to Halls, Gutierrez-Reed conducted a basic safety check by opening the latch on the revolver, revealing dummy rounds inside. She then reportedly handed the gun to Baldwin, further complicating the chain of custody of the firearm and ammunition at the scene.

Although Gutierrez-Reed has not testified in court, her initial statements to investigators about leaving the loaded gun with Halls conflict with Baldwin’s earlier claims. Baldwin initially stated that Gutierrez-Reed handed him the gun, but later changed his account to attribute it to Halls. The actor maintains that he did not pull the trigger, only cocked the hammer of the revolver.
Halls, in his testimony, admitted to neglecting a thorough examination of the rounds inside the gun, ultimately acknowledging his own negligence in ensuring safety protocols were followed. His firsthand recollection of the incident, including his proximity to Hutchins when the gun discharged, provides a harrowing perspective on the tragic event.
