Recently, news broke that the conflict between TikTok and Universal Music was not only limited to licensing agreements for recorded music, but had also extended to the publishing side of the industry. Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has now released a statement acknowledging that the current situation may be unsettling for its songwriters.

UMPG has recently issued a statement of approximately 300 words, updating the public on the TikTok dispute that arose when the initial agreement expired in January. It has become clear that a plethora of works, including popular K-pop songs, have been rendered unavailable on the platform due to the ongoing impasse.

In their latest statement, UMPG once again highlighted concerns about TikTok’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and its policies regarding user safety.

“In addition to ensuring fair compensation for your music, our negotiations have also centered on two other crucial aspects: safeguarding artists and songwriters from the negative impact of AI and ensuring online safety for TikTok users, including your younger fans,” the publisher stated.

Comments made by Universal Music executives during the Q4 earnings call further underscore the lack of progress in recent discussions. While resolving financial disputes may seem straightforward, addressing issues related to AI and user safety presents a different challenge, especially considering TikTok’s apparent reluctance to acknowledge these concerns.

UMPG’s latest statement also sheds light on TikTok’s AI strategy, citing reports that suggest a lack of value placed on music by the platform. The publisher emphasized the importance of prioritizing the long-term sustainability, safety, and well-being of the music industry as a whole.

“We understand the challenges posed by the disruption and its potential impact on your careers globally. While the current situation may be uncomfortable, it is essential for the future integrity of the music ecosystem and the well-being of music lovers,” UMPG conveyed.

“UMPG is committed to supporting partners who value their songwriters, artists, and their work. We have a strong track record of advocating for our songwriters and will continue to do so. You can rely on our unwavering support,” the publisher concluded.
