Renowned sports commentator Chris Mortensen passed away at 72, as confirmed by ESPN on Sunday.
According to ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, Mortensen was a trailblazer in the industry and a beloved colleague known for his dedication and expertise in NFL coverage. His impact on the field was profound and long-lasting, earning him respect from both coworkers and fans alike. The news of his passing has left a void in the hearts of many.
After a successful career spanning over three decades, Mortensen retired in April following his 33rd NFL draft coverage. Throughout his time at ESPN starting in 1991, he played a key role in major NFL broadcast programs and contributed to the popular “Inside the Huddle” segment on “SportsCenter.”
Despite battling esophageal cancer for years, Mortensen made the decision to prioritize his health, family, and faith, as announced in a heartfelt message shared on social media. His initial diagnosis in 2016 led to a temporary leave of absence, ultimately leading to his retirement last year.
In addition to his time at ESPN, Mortensen’s career included reporting on the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, and NFL for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. His award-winning journalism earned him recognition, including a George Polk Award in 1987. Before joining ESPN, he also covered the NFL for The National Sports Daily.
Aside from his journalistic achievements, Mortensen authored a book in 1991 titled “Playing for Keeps: How One Man Kept the Mob from Sinking Its Hooks into Pro Football.”
Chris Mortensen is survived by his wife, Micki Mortensen, and his son, Alex Mortensen, who has followed in his father’s footsteps as a football coach and former professional quarterback.
